VirtualBox

VirtualBox is a family of powerful virtualization products for enterprise as well as home use. Not only is VirtualBox an extremely feature rich, high performance product for enterprise customers, it is also the only professional solution that is freely available as Open Source Software under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL).

You can run other operating systems under your current Operating System. If you are running Windows you can run Linux as a virtual system or you can run a virtual Windows on a Linux system. VirtualBox is available for Download for most major systems. VirtualBox is easy to install and use. I currently run Ubuntu 8.10 as a virtual computer on my Windows Vista. One of the great features of VirtualBox is the ability to take snapshots of the Operating System. If you make a change to your system which causes and issue you can revert back to one of your saved snapshots. It is almost like a system backup of the whole Operating System.

This is a great way to test a new Operating System or just run software that you can’t run on your current system. There is also an option to run VirtualBox in seamless mode. Seamless mode makes it look like the virtual system is part of your native system. This is a great application with lots of possibilities and one you should have fun with.
